    GLP-1 dosing and escalation

    Quick answer

GLP-1 treatment starts with a low dose that is escalated over 16-20 weeks to maintenance dose. Slow escalation reduces side effects. The doctor adjusts the schedule individually.

Correct dosing is crucial for getting the best effect with minimal side effects. Here we explain how the escalation works.

    Why Escalation?

The body needs time to adjust to GLP-1. By starting low and increasing gradually, the risk of nausea and other side effects is reduced.

    Typical Escalation Schedule

For semaglutide: start 0.25 mg/week for 4 weeks, then 0.5 mg for 4 weeks, then gradual increase to target dose 2.4 mg. The entire process takes approximately 16-20 weeks.

    Individual Adjustment

The schedule can be adjusted if side effects occur. Some patients need more time at each dose level. The doctor follows up and adjusts.

    Frequently asked questions

What happens if I increase the dose too quickly?
The risk of side effects like nausea increases. Always follow the doctor's recommendations.
Can I stay on a lower dose?
Yes, if you're getting good results and feeling well, you don't necessarily need to reach the highest dose.
How long does dose escalation take?
Typically 16–20 weeks for Wegovy (to 2.4 mg) and 16–24 weeks for Mounjaro (to 15 mg). The timeline can be extended if you get side effects.
What if I feel nauseous during escalation?
Contact us. We can pause or extend each step, temporarily lower the dose, or add antiemetics if needed.
Do I need to reach the top dose to get results?
Not always. Many patients get good results on a mid- or maintenance dose that is well tolerated. The goal is balance between effect and tolerability.
