    Quick answer

You cannot selectively burn fat from one body area, but overall weight loss often reduces belly fat. Sleep, stress, menopause, genetics and insulin resistance all influence how much abdominal fat a person carries.

The wish to lose belly fat is understandable because abdominal fat often feels especially frustrating and is linked to more health risk. But the body does not choose fat loss based on where you want it to happen.

The difference between belly fat and visceral fat

Some abdominal fat sits under the skin, while visceral fat is stored deeper around the organs and is more strongly linked to metabolic disease.

    Why belly fat often increases

Stress, poor sleep, age, insulin resistance and hormonal shifts can all push the body toward more abdominal fat storage over time.

Why spot reduction does not work

Exercises for the stomach can improve strength, but they do not force the body to burn fat from that area first.

    What does work?

Overall weight loss, more movement, strength training, better sleep and medical obesity treatment when appropriate can reduce abdominal fat gradually.
